This week the WoW Factor returned to Scarlet Crusade, with the most unusual sponsorship yet.

We initially planned to have Mike from Epic Weapons as a guest judge this week. However, due to some unfortunate technical issues with TwitchTV and sound, we decided to postpone his involvement until a later event when we can be sure that everything is functioning properly. Elvine also experienced some sound issues, so he was quiet for the first portion of the event, leaving the judging to Keelhaul and Noelani, half the number of judges we’d originally anticipated! Nevertheless, when the technical issues were fixed we quickly got into the flow of the event.

In a curious twist, the funding for the event was neither from a WoW Factor judge nor a local sponsor. The 100,000 gold prize total was infact transferred to the Alliance via the cross-faction auction house from a member of the Horde. Xanrus won 6,000 gold for his outfit at the Scarlet Crusade Horde event in mid-April, and pledged to donate gold to have the WoW Factor return to Scarlet Crusade for an Alliance event. Sure enough, he purchased an item from Keelhaul to send the gold over to the opposing faction and even took an 18,000 gold loss on the auction house cut. An admirable display of community spirit there – thanks Xanrus!

As usual, a video of the event is available, only this time it’s hosted at our new live stream channel, WoWFactorShow @ TwitchTV. A huge thanks goes out to Elvine for providing the stream on his own channel up until this point and for continuing his camerawork on the new Twitch account. Unfortunately, due to the technical difficulties with TwitchTV servers, audio commentary was delayed for the first part of the show. Sound starts at the 0:33:35 mark.

Competition Outline

This week’s event was split into two rounds. The first round followed an approach that we have tested recently in order to reduce the duration of the events, with a share of the total prize gold distributed to participants however judges see fit, as opposed to a fixed gold prizes given in previous shows. Round two operated in much the same way, although this was not originally the intention!

This pirate outfit is fully transmogrifiable and based on the Cataclysmic Gladiator’s Leather Tunic, a Season 11 PvP item only available to rogues.

Sadly, as the chestpiece and its sole lookalike are class specific, the full look can only be achieved by rogues. The rest of the items in the set can still be obtained by other classes, however.

It was a double bill WoW Factor event this week on Elvine’s home realm. We’ll start off with a summary of the Alliance show.

As Keelhaul was only available for the first hour, we continued our guest judge theme by adding Dibby to the panel, a three-time WoW Factor winner from Earthen Ring. Elvine provided both the live stream and the full 100,000 gold prize fund for the show.
With the team all set we headed to Stormwind Cathedral once again, as the destination for this week’s festivities. We use the diamond pattern on the Cathedral floor to mark out places for participants to line up neatly, but the organisation didn’t last for too long before chaos struck.

Everything started smoothly and it wasn’t long before we had highlighted twenty outfits as winners of our first round of competition. However, part way through round two a sizeable Horde raid came bursting into Stormwind and proceeded to jump around and fire off AoE effects on top of the event participants. At first we were able to continue with minimal disruption, but after a while the intensity of the spell effects was impacting both our ability to identify contestants and the quality of the live stream. In response we took off to Stormwind Keep, seeking the aid of the only one who could protect the show and the only other location with our beloved diamond floor pattern.

There was a moment of bliss upon arriving at the Keep, with each participant quickly finding themselves a place in a ring around the throne room, as shown to the right (click to enlarge).
It was a fantastic opportunity for screenshots, but the peace didn’t last long before the Horde stormed up the ramp after us. It could have been a disaster, but King Varian Wrynn, obviously a fan of the show, stepped up and slaughtered the Horde, leaving the room clear of threats for the remaining duration of the event. Thanks, Varian!

After all of the excitement of the raid, we were eventually able to select our top six outfits of the day and prepare to visit the very Horde who had just raided our event, for the second part of the double WoW Factor show.

Competition Outline

The Stormreaver Alliance event consisted of three rounds, starting off with small amounts of gold given to multiple players and ending with just a handful receiving the top gold prizes of the day in the final round.

In the second part of the WoW Factor double bill on Stormreaver, we headed over to the Horde side of Elvine’s home realm.

The Stormreaver Horde event carried a total prize fund of 300,000 gold, the joint-largest amount we’ve ever given away in a single show, and the audience turnout in Grommash Hold was proportionately enormous. With the largest crowd we’ve ever had at a WoW Factor show, our usual destination was bursting with eager transmoggers. We’ll certainly have to consider a larger location for future events of such a scale.

Ironically, the Horde event was delayed by some thirty minutes due to a Horde raid on our Alliance show, which had started around 2 1/2 hours prior. Delays aside, we quickly got down to our transmog business with our guest judge Dibby, a previous WoW Factor winner who filled in for Keelhaul’s absence.

Our impressive prize pool came from three sponsors, the first of whom was of course Elvine, WoW Factor judge and resident of Stormreaver, who put up 175,000 gold for the Horde event, on top of 100k that he distributed amongst the Alliance earlier in the day. A further 100,000 was added by Accession guild, who showed up in force at the event. To complete the package, 25,000 gold came from Audem Gold, a gold-maker and recent transfer to the realm. Thanks to all of the sponsors for your contributions.

Being that the gold total was so much larger than normal events, we opted to merge our first and second rounds, in the hope of speeding up the time it would take to look around and award prizes to the many participants. Rather than giving increasing amounts of gold, we could choose to award either a small or large sum on the spot, depending on our impression of the outfit. The system worked well and after working our way around the room, we were able to short-list thirteen characters to enter our final round of competition, to compete for the top prizes of the day.

Competition Outline

Our normal competition structure was altered due to a last minute changed to the total prize fund. Rounds 1 and 2 were judged simultaneously, with judges awarding either 2000 or 10000 to outfits, if they were deemed worthy of a prize. Participants were given an option to change outfits mid-way through this combined round, so that they may have another chance to win. The total prize fund was 300,000 gold, donated by the following: Elvine – 175,000, Accession guild – 100,000, AudemGold – 25,000.

How to get the set:

There are technically four armor pieces bearing the Inferno Forged name, however none of them fit together particularly well. As such, we have opted to compile a set based around just one piece, the leggings.

The chestpiece and boots worn by the Blood Elf are infact perfect matches for the legs, although there are seemingly no perfect matches available for the other slots.

We’ve included two sets of items below, one for each of the mail wearing classes. The top picture represents a hunter, the lower-right a shaman. Any pieces which differ from the hunter version are outlined in the ‘Alternatives’ section at the bottom of the article.

How to get the set:

This outfit is based around the Kul Tiras Marines which once roamed around Tiragarde Keep in Durotar. Tragically, when the Cataclysm struck, all but one marine were killed in a tidal wave. The sole survivor is now perched in the crow’s nest of a ship washed aground, over 100 yards from the shore.

The set cannot be transmogrified, as it’s a mixture of mail and plate items.

It’s important to note that there is no Kul Tiras tabard available in-game. The one shown in the image is a guild tabard which has been designed to replicate those worn by the marines in Durotar. Therefore, this look cannot be perfectly imitated unless you have your own Kul Tiras guild. We’ve included an alternative chestpiece, as shown in the second picture, which might suffice if you are not able to wear this specialised guild tabard.

Update (05 May ’12): The Horde prize fund has been increased to 300,000 gold!

The pressure was on as the WoW Factor team was called upon to act as guest judges in a last minute 300,000 gold transmog show, where we were tasked with handing out half of the total prize fund.

With just 24 hours notice before the event and a limited time-frame in which to do the judging, we had to be on top form to select the winners for the Sunday evening event on Dath’Remar US, our first show on an Oceanic realm. The event was sponsored and organised by Sqqualli and Vishii, both of whom are quitting WoW in order to focus upon Diablo III in the coming months. What better way to go than to throw a 300k transmog party?

In Keelhaul’s absense we were joined by special guest Caylena, who proved to be well up to the speed-judging challenge laid out by the sponsors. As always, the live stream video of the judging can be seen at Elvine’s TwitchTV.

Keelhaul’s home-realm was the desination for the WoW Factor show this week. We even brought a special guest along for the party.

Having held the last few Alliance events in Stormwind, we decided to return to the Library in Ironforge’s Hall of Explorers this week, the location of the very first WoW Factor show. The ring of stairs around the room provided an excellent setting around which contestants could arrange themselves – a real indoor amphitheatre experience. The venue was perhaps a little small given how many showed up for the event in the end, but the atmosphere was lively.

Keelhaul was unfortunately only able to attend the first half of the event due to family activies, but we were happy to bring in a guest judge for the day. Mara aka Tmaralee, is a veteran of WoW Factor events, having won prizes on two different characters on two seperate shows on Earthen Ring US. She has also been a consistent help to the project in the past, answering questions from other WoW Factor participants in-game and on the live stream, and has a keen eye for transmogrification, providing weekly transmog challenges on the Disenchanting Azeroth forums.

Despite the large number of participants, we were able to shave the event down to a little over three hours in duration. It’s still a lengthy session, but that’s only testament to the quality of the outfits and the importance we place upon seeing all characters in attendance.

There was general agreement between the judges until the final round of competition, at which point we tried something new. With several candidates vying for the final spot in the Top 3 sets, the top prize category of the day, each judge selected and advocated one outfit that they considered worthy of 10,000 gold. A quick vote between the four yielded a winner, but the three runners-up were awarded a consolation item prize on top of any gold they had previously won. Perhaps we’ll try this approach more in future shows.

The event was comprised of three rounds, with prize gold value increasing and the number of winners decreasing in each until we had selected our top sets of the day. We also included a few item give-aways as consolation gifts for characters who narrowly missed out on a gold prize. The total prize fund was 100,000 gold, sponsored by Keelhaul.

How to get the set:

This particular pirate outfit is fully transmogrifiable and is based around the Alliance version of the Knightbane Carapace.

Unfortunately the Horde version of the chestpiece looks considerably different in both model and colouration. As such the outfit depicted in this article is applicable only to Alliance characters.

How to get the set:

This particular pirate outfit is fully transmogrifiable and based around two red chestpieces, the Crimson Silk Vest and the normal-mode Corsair’s Overshirt.

If you wish to roleplay as a pirate, you can of course lose the shoulders, gloves and other less prominent items. You can also replace the legs with Simple Linen Pants, which are much easier to obtain, but not transmogrifiable.

The items shown here are a mixture of tailored goods, BoE world drops and pre-60 instance drops. The boots will likely be the hardest piece to obtain, due to high demand, but the rest of the BoE’s should not be too hard to find on the Auction House.

The WoW Factor team revisited Earthen Ring alliance after two months away. Did the realm have anything new for us?

Friday’s show on Earthen Ring represented a milsetone for the WoW Factor project, most specifically Keelhaul. The 125,000 gold prize package that Keel had to put together was enough to tip him over the 2,000,000 gold mark – two million given away at transmogrification events since 4.3 was released. It was great to see that so many characters showed up to participate in the celebratory party. Congratulations, Keel!

With Elvine away on holiday for the week, we were back down to three judges for this event. Caylena of Deathwing US, a WoW Factor show regular, was quick to organise participants in Stormwind Cathedral (Thanks, Caylena!), whilst we assisted Keelhaul in his preparation to take on the duties of the live streaming for the night. The venue filled up quickly and we promptly got to work checking out the wide array of transmogrification outfits.

As the evening progressed, one factor that really made the show stand out from others recently was the calm atmosphere. The vast majority of attendees patiently stood in ordered lines along the length of the Cathedral. There was very little in the way of shouting, obstructing the live stream camera, aoe spam and all of the other usual troll tricks we see each week. We were very impressed with how supportive members of the Earthen Ring community were towards eachother and the event as a whole.

Among the highlights of the evening were the antics of The Phantom Legion, a guild who showed up in force with transmogrification outfits matching their tabards (pictured above). Not only were their outfits excellent, they also added extra roleplay flavour to the event when standing in formation and following drill commands.

We narrowed the pool of contestants down to just three in the end. Usually we would stop at the top three or five outfits of the night, but the Earthen Ring community was particularly keen on having a top mog nominated. We opted to have an ‘overall best’ outfit with a grand prize of 20,000 gold. As expected, the decision making process was far from easy and picking a single best outfit added a lot of time onto a show that was already running long, but it was a pleasure to see the crowd eagerly edging closer and closer to the stairs upon which the top three were standing, until the moment the eventual winner was selected.

Competition Outline

This week we divided the contest into four rounds, starting off with small prizes for multiple characters and ending a single large prize for the outfit that was judged to be the best of the night. In contrast to our usual rules, characters were not required to have won a prize in a preceeding round in order to be eligible for a later round. Beyond the gold prizes, Keelhaul also brought a few items to give out to deserving participants.

Intrigue

Intrigue was awarded the grand prize for completing an outfit unlike any we’ve previously seen at a WoW Factor event. Not only do the colours blend perfectly, but the items are from a variety of sources – by no means an obvious outfit.

How to get the sets:

Triumphant pieces are BoE world drops from high level creatures in old Azerothian zones/instances. The most reliable source for them seems to be the two Ahn’Qiraj raids which, whilst the drop rates are very low, have a large number of trash mobs capable of dropping the items.

We’ve included a couple of extra items below, which we feel accompany the set well. It’s worth noting that we have left out the original Triumphant head and shoulders for aesthetic reasons, but you can view them here anyway.

Last night was not only our first show to be fully sponsored by someone outside of the WoW Factor team, it also had the largest prize total to date.

It came as quite a surprise to log in an hour before the event on Scarlet Crusade was to begin and find dozens of people already gathered at Grommash Hold in Orgrimmar. This was in stark contrast to our event last event, on Latebringer, where the masses arrived after the designated start time. Apparently our sponsors for the night did an excellent job of talking the show up on trade chat.

In an unexpected twist, Arida aka the WoWMarketeer, the sponsor of this particular show, doubled the prize fund to 200,000 gold shortly before the event kicked off. This allowed us to substantially increase both the number of prize recipients and the value of the top prizes, over what we had initially planned. A huge thanks to Arida for putting forward such an impressive prize package and a further thanks to Astheria for helping to organise the masses throughout the course of the event.

It took a long time to whittle the group down to the top forty in the first round of competition, especially as many more great outfits were piling in to the room as the event went on. Thankfully the decision making process became easier in later rounds, once we’d had a chance to look at everyone in the tightly-packed room. We’ve listed a complete outline of the competition structure and the winners below.

For the Scarlet Crusade event, we divided the competition into three main rounds, starting off with a large number of characters winning small prizes and gradually working up to the largest prizes by process of elimination.
